This set is an example of packaging in trays, to mimic the Republican practice of housing mahjong in sets of purpose made drawers. In this case the handmade trays are contained in a heavily brown lacquered box with an upwardly sliding door at the end. The tiles themselves are made of early plastic or Chinese Bakelite. They have nice rounded corners, are quite chunky, and are a complete set of 144, with possibly added but matching ‘flower and season’ tiles. The ‘flower and season’ tiles are carved with the 4 seasons and the less common grouping of cat, mouse, official and cornucopia.
