VMJ-239

HK$20,000.00

An exceptionally rare find, this set is in its original shipping box and in an unused condition. In the 1920’s sets were hand carved in Shanghai workshops and packaged into cardboard boxes for shipment to England. Wood cabinets and boxes were made for these sets in England where they were sold. This allowed for quality control of the cabinets and a supply of authentic sets hand-carved in bone, a skill that was not available in Europe.

This set is of 148 tiles, including 4 blank tiles. Each tile is made of 50:50 cow bone and bamboo. The tiles are finely carved and coloured and are still vibrant having lived in their shipping box untouched. The tiles have carved roman letters or numbers in their corner for easy recognition.

The ‘flower and season’ tiles are intricately carved and an English ‘Jackpot’ Rule Book (1923) has been added to the box. The box itself bears the name of the Shanghai exporter Harvie Cooke & Co, together with the stamp Made in China. On one side it is stamped Type 3, which must relate to the composition of the set, the thickness of the bone and/or the intricacy of the decoration. The top of the box is stamped with the name of the box of manufacturer China Fibre Container Company, Shanghai.

The set includes the original bone ming box with wind indicators, and mini box with 4 bone dice.
